Cohort summaries
This section summarizes sample characteristics for the biological and neuroimaging resources available in BHRC. All values are cohort-level aggregates; no participant-level records or identifiers are displayed.
Psychiatric diagnoses were derived from the Development and Well-Being Assessment (DAWBA) using DSM-IV criteria, and suicidality measures were obtained from the Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS). Because BHRC includes repeated assessments, cumulative tables capture the first occurrence of each disorder across waves, providing an estimate of lifetime prevalence through the most recent available follow-up.
These summaries provide context for analyses involving genotyping and polygenic scores (PGS), neuroimaging, DNA methylation, microRNA (miRNA), RNA sequencing, and whole-genome sequencing (WGS). Each chapter reports demographic characteristics, wave-specific psychiatric phenotypes, and cumulative phenotypes for the relevant analytic sample.

Sample counts represent raw data availability before modality-specific quality control. Wave-specific phenotype summaries skip missing assessments for that phenotype. Cumulative cases are participants who met the phenotype definition at any observed timepoint; an unobserved wave is not treated as absence of the phenotype.
Anxiety disorders include panic disorder, agoraphobia, generalized anxiety disorder, social phobia, and specific phobias. Suicidal ideation was defined as endorsement of either “Did you want to be dead or wished you could go to sleep and never wake up?” or “Have you actually had thoughts of killing yourself?”, while suicide attempts were defined based on reports of aborted, interrupted, or actual attempts.
